Overview
Our objective was to create a visually dynamic, educational website to engage audiences in ocean conservation through Nickelodeon’s Operation Sea Change initiative. The digital team delivered a vibrant digital experience that captures Nickelodeon’s signature energy while promoting awareness of pressing environmental issues. Featuring bold colors, playful icons, and interactive elements, the site is easy to navigate, inviting users to explore resources, videos, and events that encourage real-world action. This project combines compelling visuals with educational content to inspire sustainable habits and join the mission to protect marine life.

Challenges
A key challenge in designing the Nickelodeon Operation Sea Change website was to thoughtfully integrate iconic SpongeBob SquarePants elements—like its recognizable colors, silhouettes, and subtle references—without making it feel overly playful, as the site addresses the serious issue of ocean pollution. The design needed to strike a balance between approachable and informative, capturing Nickelodeon’s energy while maintaining a tone that emphasizes the urgency of environmental action.
Research
For the research phase, I explored existing Nickelodeon sites, maritime-themed websites, and design elements that evoke an “ocean vibe” to capture an authentic marine atmosphere. Additionally, I delved into the background of SpongeBob SquarePants creator Stephen Hillenburg, whose work as a marine biologist and commitment to ocean conservation deeply informed the series. This insight inspired a design approach that pays homage to Hillenburg’s vision by subtly blending marine-inspired elements with Nickelodeon’s playful energy, creating an engaging yet purpose-driven platform that champions ocean preservation.
Design Process
In the design process, I used animated wavy elements to break up sections, evoking the fluidity of ocean waves and enhancing the site’s marine theme. To subtly incorporate the SpongeBob influence, I included seaweed and the iconic star shape, creating continuity with the brand while maintaining a conservation-focused aesthetic.
For the “Ocean Pollution Crisis” section, I initially used the silhouette of the Empire State Building to visually represent the scale of pollution. However, after collaboration with the team, we decided to stay true to the SpongeBob theme by replacing it with a graphic of SpongeBob’s iconic pineapple house. This change not only reinforced the playful tone of the brand but also kept the design aligned with the environmental focus, maintaining a balance between fun and the serious message of ocean conservation.

Results
The Nickelodeon Operation Sea Change website was successfully launched, achieving its goal of engaging users in ocean conservation while staying true to Nickelodeon’s brand identity. The project not only created an immersive, user-friendly experience but also helped raise awareness about the ocean pollution crisis. Ultimately, the website serves as a successful digital platform, inspiring visitors to take meaningful action toward environmental conservation.
